Knowing which industry your food business falls under, and subsequently which training course you need to complete, can be hard. The reason you have to choose an industry is that the Statement of Attainment you’re awarded for Food Safety Supervisor training is industry specific.
Food businesses have different training requirements because they’re all so different. Each business is categorised into an industry, also known as a food sector, depending on what type of business it is, what type of food it handles and where it’s located. Different industries have different training requirements, and if you want to work as the Food Safety Supervisor, you have to complete the Units of Competency suitable for your industry.
You will need to choose your industry when you enrol in our Food Safety Supervisor Course. You should also note that each state and territory only recognises certain industries, which we’ve listed a little further down this article.
The industries you can choose from are:
Hospitality: Suitable if you work in a hotel, restaurant or cafe
Retail: Suitable if you work in catering, a supermarket, a deli, grocer, convenience store or market stall
Food Processing: Suitable if you work in airline catering, a bakery, cannery or food manufacturing business
Health & Community: Suitable if you work in a hospital, aged care or childcare facility
Transport & Distribution: Suitable if you deliver food or work in a food storage facility
The following are the only industries recognised for Food Safety Supervisor training in each state and territory:
ACT: Hospitality, Retail and Health & Community are accepted. Supermarket workers located within the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) should select the Hospitality industry to meet ACT government requirements
NSW: Hospitality and Retail are accepted
NT: Hospitality and Retail are accepted
QLD: All industries are accepted
SA: Hospitality, Retail and Health & Community are accepted

If you are participating in the Advanced Food Safety Course or the Allergen Management Course, you don’t need to select your industry.
