What do I need to legally work as a responsible server of alcohol in NSW?

Find out what you need to work as a Responsible Server of Alcohol in NSW: an approved RSA course and an L&GNSW Competency Card from Service NSW.

In NSW, you need a Liquor & Gaming NSW (L&GNSW)-issued RSA Competency Card to legally work as a Responsible Server of Alcohol.

To obtain this credential, you need to complete two steps:

  1. Complete an RSA (NSW) course with an approved training provider like AIFS

  2. Lodge your Interim Certificate in person at a Service NSW centre to apply for your Competency Card

Once you've completed both steps, you'll receive your Interim Certificate, which lets you start working as a Responsible Server of Alcohol in NSW straight away.

Your Interim Certificate lets you work for up to 90 days while your Competency Card is processed. Allow around 5 weeks for your card to arrive by mail - more information can be found here.
